ERM (Employee Relationship Manager): when HR stands for Human Relationship.

For too long we’ve been talking about CRM, the management of relationships with our customers. In practice, we need to know our client, to get the most he can give us. We must treat them well and we have to manage this with expensive software that help us build a database that may, or may not, one day be used.

In times of crisis, where new customers are difficult to achieve, a good relationship is essential, no doubt.

But in times of crisis, companies increasingly need their employees, at least those who last.

Same as the CRM, used to understand and extract the maximum from this relationship with our customer, we need to bring in our staff, to extract the maximum they can give. We need all the assistance possible.

Let’s create the ERM, Employee Relationship Management. Get to know your staff, now!

The current model, where we have our employees registered with the official address, telephone number and birthday is totally ineffective in this new model. We need more.

I will cite some examples that could be the start of our ERM and hope that at some point we begin to value and use this new information.

Do you know if your HR knows the anniversary date of the employee’s partner? no ?

Do you know that employee’s partner is the one who can help him to decide many things regarding to the company, like quitting for example ? Why not have them on our side? why not show to your employee that you care about his family?

Why not send flowers, a small box of candy or even a simple email in the partner’s birthday ? In the bottom line, which counts is that you care about their family.

Does HR knows something about the children of the employee? birthdates, school, sports? Learn the anniversary and buy tickets for a movie and give your employee a mid-shift out that day.

Know the school and suggest a visit to the company. Know the sport and create a day where all the employee’s children can join their parents for a pleasure day.

Which book your employee likes ? which kind he is interested ? how about the music ? What kind of music ? does he likes to travel ? where to ? Why all this information ? that’s easy !

Take in the company’s library (you have one, don’t you?) the newly arrived favorite kind of book and handed it in firsthand or send some reviews and recommendations about his preferred book and music genres.

Does he likes to travel? promote lectures on travel, among the group that likes to travel. Bring a specialist, or someone who has been traveling to exotic places and want to tell their experiences. Invite a travel agent to be available all day long at the company, 1 day a month. I’m sure it will be free.

Close up with your employee, not only to ask for a report. Be part of his life. In fact, you already part of his life. Join the good part too!

Someone in his family got sick and he can’t attend the company, what you do ? Instead of being complaining about this or about the report that he had to deliver, has someone from HR to call him, see if he's okay, if he needs something. Surprise him. Show that the company cares.

Make your employee remember and associate the company to good things: the book that he read, the book that the company sent to his son, the lectures on travel, the half-day off with his son in the movie.

Do you see the difference when you show that you care ?

These are some examples in a world of actions that can be done to treat them well. Is it worth? I’m sure it is, but if you have questions about this, you do need to know more about people.

Btw, lack of money can not be used as an excuse. Small actions can have large results without costs.

Think about it and start immediately the ERM. You don’t need a software to map your staff into regions and cities.

Walk to the room next door and starts to care.
